Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Bridge?2016-06-13T15:35:55+01:00

A bridge is a combination of crowns, joined together to replace missing teeth.

What are Crowns?2016-03-29T12:42:11+01:00

Crowns cover the whole surface of the tooth, and are usually used to repair fractured teeth.

What are Veneers?2016-06-13T15:36:37+01:00

Veneers are thin porcelain facings that are bonded to the teeth to improve appearance. Veneers are durable and long-lasting. It is an attractive option for people who are not interested in orthodontic braces to straighten teeth.

What are Dental Implants?2016-03-29T12:41:16+01:00

These are the perfect solution to missing teeth. They offer you the strength and long-term durability that is comparable to your own teeth. Once implants have been placed, they can be used to support a single-tooth crown, a bridge restoration or even secure dentures firmly in place, and allow you to eat again with confidence.

What are the signs of mouth cancer?2018-09-24T13:46:39+01:00

Unfortunately, mouth cancer is an ever-increasing disease. If caught early it is very treatable. Some warning signs include:

  •  white/red patches

  • persistent ulcers, sore throats

  • moving teeth and heavy gum bleeding

At every check-up at Haly Dental Care all our patients are scanned for signs of mouth cancer.

Is it safe to go to Hungary and Bulgaria to get dental care?2016-06-13T15:28:27+01:00

We have seen these cases now for over 10 years. In my opinion, some are lucky and get good dental work. However, the majority are a disaster. The materials are cheap and do not last, and the standard of work is well below the standards set by us at Haly Dental Care. Unfortunately, patients never get the savings they think they will because of:

  •  Over aggressive sales techniques – convincing patients to partake in unnecessary treatments once they are in the chair.

  • Re-doing poor dental work is often expensive. It is very common to hear of a patient who needs two crowns coming out with six crowns, and they still think they have got a bargain and haven’t been conned; this is until the crowns come undone due to shoddy work and subpar materials.

  • Always remember your local dentist cares about your dental health and the welfare of the patient, these mercenary dentists do not!
Why have whitening products been taken off the shelves of Beauty Salons?2016-06-13T15:38:01+01:00

After numerous disasters and litigation cases, the Irish government has followed the advice of the British Dental Association and banned the sale of whitening products by these organisations. From October 2012, only verified dental professionals will be able to provide whitening.

What is the best way to whiten my teeth?2016-06-13T15:39:53+01:00

The best and safest way to whiten your teeth is under the supervision of a dentist. At Haly Dental Care, we use Rembrandt Whitening Laser System. This is an American system which is often used by the best cosmetic dentists. Our system has improved the smiles of hundreds of our patients safely and with brilliant results. We believe it is the best system in the world today and the results speak for themselves.

Is it true gum disease can lead to heart disease?2016-03-29T12:37:03+01:00

Yes, it has been proven that the same bacteria that cause gum disease are also involved in heart disease.

What are the signs of gum disease?2016-03-29T12:36:35+01:00

Typically patients may notice bleeding gums, bad breath and may notice loosening or moving of teeth.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?2016-06-13T16:05:03+01:00

We recommend patients get a scale & polish twice a year, unless there is another risk factor to gum disease. Risk factors include:

  • Diabetes
  • Cancer patients
  • Smokers

In these cases, an extra visit in the year is recommended.

When should my child get braces?2018-09-24T13:46:40+01:00

This varies between patients; some children have growth problems, which are often caused by thumb sucking or soothers. If a child’s teeth adhere to this problem, a brace (retainer types) can be fitted as early as is suitable. These days, it is rare to wait until all the baby teeth are gone as we can now accurately predict if a child will have crowding or crooked teeth. If this is the case, a brace (retainer type) can easily be custom fitted to help solve the problem from an early age.

Train-tracks: These are only fitted when the baby teeth are gone. They are excellent for correcting the level and alignment of the teeth.

What are fissure seals?2016-03-29T12:35:07+01:00

Between the ages of 5 and 6 years your child gets their first adult molar tooth. This is an exceptionally important tooth throughout their lives, as it is our main chewing tooth. We can now protect the biting surface from decay by placing a sealant over this surface. This is a very easy procedure for your child, an excellent introduction to dental care and does not need injections!

How to prevent cavities in children’s teeth2016-03-29T12:34:40+01:00

Children visit our hygienist and are shown how to brush and floss properly. Prevention is our motto and we try to keep your children motivated to maintain excellent dental health throughout their early years, into their teens, and beyond.

At what age should I bring my child for the first time?2018-09-24T13:46:40+01:00

Usually between 4 and 5 years.

At Haly Dental Care we believe your child’s first visit should be a very positive experience. We have a special surgery set up for children where everything is positive (including the dentist!). They receive stickers and other surprises as rewards.
